Smiling hijabi women with podcast episode text about true meaning of being Muslim

What Does It Really Mean to Be a Muslim? (Hint: It’s Not What You Think)

Curious about Islam? A new Muslim? Or just tired of stereotypes? Let’s cut through the noise.

When I said my Shahada (the declaration of faith in Islam), one question kept swirling in my mind: What does it actually mean to be a Muslim? And why does Islam have such a misunderstood reputation?

Spoiler: The truth is simpler - and far more beautiful - than what you’ve been told.

Whether you’re exploring Islam, a recent convert, or just here for honest conversations, let’s unpack this together. No filters. No fluff.

Islam, Unfiltered: Why I Keep It Simple
Quick note to my fellow Muslims: You’ll notice I don’t use much Arabic in this space. Here’s why. When I first became Muslim, I felt like I needed a PhD in Arabic just to keep up. The jargon overwhelmed me, and worse - it made me feel like an outsider in my own faith.

So consider this Islam, simplified. Because faith shouldn’t feel like a language barrier.

"Islam Isn’t a Country—Wait, What?"
True story: A friend once asked me, “How can you be a Muslim? Don’t those people come from Islam—the country?”

I laughed. Then I realized: This is the level of confusion we’re dealing with.

And honestly? I get it. For most of us, Islam was either:

Glossed over in school,

Reduced to a movie punchline, or

Shrouded in political headlines.

Time to hit reset. Forget what you’ve heard. Let’s start fresh.

Islam = Submission. Muslim = One Who Submits.
The words “Islam” and “Muslim” sound intimidating, but their meanings are strikingly simple:

Islam = “Submission” (to God).

Muslim = “One who submits.”

That’s it. A Muslim is someone who submits to a single Creator - God.

But here’s the twist: When I say “God,” you likely feel at ease. But if I say “Allah,” suddenly, tension creeps in.

Why?

Because “Allah” is just the Arabic word for God, used by Arab Christians too! The discomfort comes from conditioning, not the word itself.

Islam’s core message? The same one brought by prophets like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus (peace be upon them all): Belief in one Creator.

The Quran: A Living Miracle
Here’s what stunned me about Islam:

The Quran (Islam’s holy book) has been preserved in its original Arabic for 1,400+ years.

Even translations aren’t considered the Quran - just interpretations.

If every scripture vanished tomorrow, Muslims could recreate the Quran word-for-word. Why? Millions have memorized it entirely.

That’s a global, centuries-long effort to protect the original message. How incredible is that?

Final Takeaway: It’s About Truth, Not Labels
Being Muslim isn’t about stereotypes, politics, or where you’re from. It’s about:

Connecting with something greater than yourself.

Seeking truth beyond the noise.

Belonging to a legacy of faith that spans millennia.
